Introduction

The sea and its fruition is and has always been a source of life, an economic resource, a playground, a reason to daydream, an inspiration to creative labour. Such belief has led us to the selection of this subject as a truly meaningful one to our children. We prepared an educational program to approach it as thoroughly as possible. Our key goal is to alert our students’ awareness as to how significant, economically and culturally speaking, the sea and tourism really are for our countries’ development; make them develop views and stands about sea life and provide them an enhanced experience about island and seaside cultures, its traditions and its future.

The activities we chose consist on visits to national tourism agencies, contacts with tourism representatives and policy makers directly implicated in the respective national tourism development, visits to Tourism Schools and tourist national significant organizations. This action will privilege the direct contact with different seaside and island cultures, and will provide the groundwork for numerous exhibitions and mutual recognition of the magnitude and meaning of the sea and tourism as a spring of material and cultural wealth. The sea constitutes an immense source of identity and community; the approach to global issues like the sea and tourism can, effectively, unite peoples and specially children from all origins and also provide an exceptional illustration of the frailty of maritime ecosystems, thus strengthening a common and practical sense of environmental schooling.

The final product of our project we hope to be the creation of analytic seaside tourism itineraries, built by children, for all the countries involved; also we’ll assemble several inter-exchanging exhibitions on this main subject, which will culminate with the online publication of a common database about seaside culture and tourism.
